Diagnosis of chondroid syringoma is difficult because of non-characteristic clinical findings of the lesion and may be confused with numerous cutaneous lesions. Diagnosis is commonly made by histopathogical examination. The aim of this study was to search which departments the cases that were given diagnosis of chondroid syringoma were consulted and which preorerative diagnoses they were given. Material and Methods: The data related to 35 cases who were diagnosed histopathologically as chondroid syringoma, in our Hospital’s Pathology department, between 1997-2006 were evaluated retrospectively. All of the cases were recorded information related with age, gender, location and size of the lesion, consultant clinic and preoperative diagnosis. Results: It was detected that 22 ones (62.9%) of the cases attended to the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery department, 5 ones(14.3%) of the cases to the Otorhinolaryngology, 4 ones (11.4%) of the cases to the General Surgery departmet and the other 4 ones (11.4%) of the cases to the Dermatology department. The preorepative diagnosis were not determined in about fifty percent of all cases. All of the other cases were taken diagnoses other than chondroid syringoma preoperatively. Sebaceous cyst (22.8%) and basal cell carcinoma (5.7%) were mostly encountared two preoperative diagnoses.
Conclusion: All of the cases were taken diagnoses other than chondroid syringoma preoperatively. This ituation has pointed out that dermatologists and clinicians in all other related specialties should more frequently keep in mind chondroid syringoma in the differential diagnosis of nodular lesions in the head and neck regions. Keywords: Skin neoplasms; sweat gland neoplasms; pleomorphic adenomaTurkiye Klinikleri J Dermatol 2008, 18:5-8
