The logic that lies behind the laser hair removal is the transmission of the energy of laser light to melanin, which damages the hair and its follicle. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser in hair removal.
Material and Methods: Between October 2004- October 2005, 221 anatomic sites of 180 volunteers (Female=165, Male=15), who were admitted to the Cosmetology Unit, and who fulfilled the inclusion criteria, were treated with 1064 nm long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser (Laserscope® Lyrai) which has a wavelength of 20-100 miliseconds and fluences ranging from 5-50 Joule/cm² with a 10 mm spot size.
Results: Response was defined as hair reduction of greater than 50%. Response was achieved in 64.1%, 76.0%, 89.3% and 100% of the patients after 1, 2, 3 and 4 sessions, respectively. As the number of sessions increased, the percentage of patients who had benefit has increased (P = 0.004). Thick hairs responded 1.51 times more (95% confidence interval=1.18-1.93) than thinner hairs, and the difference was statistically significant (P <0.001). However, response was independent from the color of the hair; either being black or brown.
Skin phototype III (n=59) was the most common skin phototype (63.5%). No statistically significant relationship between response and age, gender or skin phototype was found. When pain was excluded, the most common side effect was erythema (n=47). All side effects, including the postinflammatory hypopigmentation, healed without leaving any permanent sequel.
Conclusions: The results of this study show that Nd:YAG laser might be used as an effective modality for epilation. Keywords: Laser, hair-removal, dermatologyTurkiye Klinikleri J Dermatol 2007, 17:231-235
