The disease is presented especially in the southern part of Turkey. Hydroxyurea is an S phase specific chemotherapeutic agent that is used for the treatment of sickle cell anemia. Hydroxyurea decreases the requirement of transfusion and reduces painful crises but it has been reported to cause cutaneous and mucosal adverse effects. In this study, we aimed to find out cutaneous manifestations in patients with sickle cell anemia and reveal cutaneous, nail and mucosal adverse effects in those treated with hydroxyurea.
Material and Methods: Dermatologic examinations of 71 patients (33 males, 38 females) with sickle cell anemia who attended to Antakya Thalassemia center in the year of 2005 were performed.
Results: One or more cutaneous manifestations were detected in 29 (40.8%) patients. Leg ulcer was the most frequent one (n=12, 16.9%). Thirty one patients were receivig hydroxyurea. Xerosis (n=5) and hyperpigmentation of hands and nails (n=1) were detected in 16.2% of the patients due to the hydroxurea treatment.
Conclusions: Leg ulcer was found to be the most common skin disease; and xerosis, the most common cutaneous adverse effect of hydroxyurea. It was concluded that, hydroxyurea-related cutaneous side effects were not severe in sickle cell anemia. Keywords: Sickle cell anemia, hydroxyurea, leg ulcer, adverse effectTurkiye Klinikleri J Dermatol 2007, 17:228-230
