Material and Method: Our study population included 140 patients with AGA (100 males and 40 females). 25 healthy males and 25 healthy females were taken as control group. All patients filled out sociodemographic clinical questioning, Beck Depression Inventory and Beck Anxiety Inventory tests. Data were evaluated with chi-quare test, student's t, Mann Whitney-u, Anova and Pearson test.
Results: Depression level in female patients with AGA was higher than that of healthy females and male patients with AGA. However, anxiety level was not different than that of healthy female group and males with AGA. Depression and anxiety in male patients with AGA were not significantly different from male control group. No significant difference in sociodemographic parameters such age, marital status, education situation in patient and control groups was established. Depression points were significantly high in the patients with AGA, who had psychiatric history in their families
Conclusion: We think that AGA supports depressive psycho-pathology more in women for depression; however, it does not affect males significantly. Keywords: Androgenetic alopecia, depression, anxietyTurkiye Klinikleri J Dermatol 2005, 15:59-64
