Ege Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Dermatoloji ABD, Bornova, İZMİR Therapy of onychogryphosis consists of radical surgical
intervention or a series of preventive measures. The
purpose of radical surgical intervention is to destroy the
nail matrix. Two of the most frequently used surgical methods
are Zadik procedure (total matricectomy with surgical
blade) and and chemical cauterization with phenol.
The recurrence rate with Zadik procedure is 28-35%
while for phenol cauterization it is 0-10%. Prolonged application
of phenol can cause damage in the surrounding
tissues and may delay healing. Two patients with a total
of 8 onychogryphotic nails treated with the combination of
2 methods are presented. Shortened healing time is noted
and recurrences or spicule formations are not observed
during the 1-year follow-up.Keywords: Onychogryphosis, Surgical treatmentT Klin Dermatoloji 1996, 5:118-120
