Most often seen in the lower extremities, lymphedema
is a condition characterized by the accumulation of a
protein rich fluid in the Interstitial space. Pathophysiological
ly lymphedema originates from the obstruction of the
subcutaneous lymphatic flow but for unknown reasons
the deep lymphatics are not involved. Congenital or acquired,
it may result from a number of cause. Even for
today the treatment of lymphedema is considered to be
extremely long and difficult. In this article we intended to
discuss the etiological factors, pathophysiology and the
